Verbs ending in -IR

(au présent)

There are several hundred regular French verbs that end in -ir.

To conjugate them in PRESENT

remove the infinitive ending (-ir)

and then add one of the following verb endings:

je -is

tu -is

il -it

elle -it

nous -issons

vous -issez

ils -issent

elles -issent

Par exemple…

choisir (to choose)

je choisis (I choose)

tu choisis

il choisit

elle choisit

nous choisissons

vous choisissez

ils choisissent

elles choisissent

Note: in a negative sentence:

We do not choose = Nous ne choisissons pas

To conjugate the verbs ending in -IR in the PASSÉ COMPOSÉ (a past tense)

remove the infinitive ending (-ir)

and then add -i (you call this part of the verb the PAST PARTICIPLE)

Remember that the PASSÉ COMPOSÉ has 2 PARTS

(part a + part b):

part a. the auxiliary AVOIR or ÊTRE conjugated in the present tense

part b. the past participle of the verb
