I have decided to be open-minded and ready to read in French for the next 5 - 10 - 15 - 20 minutes
Before I start my reading, I made sure to have a dictionary accessible
I understand that I should not intend to know the meaning of every single word I will be reading
Before I read, I look for pictures or visual cues if any given
Before I read the text, I read the title
If I have been given any questions related to my reading, I will read the questions prior to reading the text as this may assist me
Before I start reading, what are my predictions? (using the visual cues, and the title as well as the questions, what information can I get them these sources)
I start reading the text
I am not going to rush while reading
I will use my fingers to guide my reading
While I am reading, are there any words that I recognize (similar to English or any other language that I know)
If I come across a longer word, I will cut it down into syllables. I will look for the root word.
As I am reading the text, I occasionally pause in order to ask myself questions related to what I am reading (I ask myself questions about what I know about the topic, etc.) ie: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How?
As I finish reading a group of sentences or a short paragraph, I pause and by using a keyword or a few words, I ask myself what title would I give to this paragraph
To add to my vocabulary while reading, I make a note of the words I do not understand while keeping in mind that I do not have to understand every single word
If I am required to answer questions following my reading, I re-read the questions and ask myself if I am expected to find the answer in the text OR am supposed to interpret part of the text
I will focus on answering the question and will have confidence in myself
I will give it a try and know that making mistakes is part of the learning process
I understand that practice will make it better
I am confident that I can do this, without focusing on the outcome
